Firms and law departments constantly modulate their hiring
practices to ensure superior responsiveness to client needs--while
responsibly controlling costs. A sudden influx of new work,
unanticipated staff reductions, and client needs outside the
firm/department's expertise can wreak havoc on even the most
experienced manager's planning. In these situations, experienced,
trustworthy contract or project legal professionals can ensure
stable delivery of service to your clients with minimum impact
on the firm or department's budget and headcount.
A Talented Roster
At CBG, we maintain a pre-interviewed group of several hundred
attorneys, paralegals, document reviewers and translators who
are currently available for many reasons. They are attorneys
augmenting their practice, parents, writers, newcomers to the
area, and fast-trackers, who are taking time to consider their
career moves. They also cross the entire spectrum of experience,
specialization and abilities. And we constantly renew the roster.
The greatest number of highly qualified candidates exists in
the 5-to-15-years experience range. As such, they can work with
relative independence, and are amply qualified for the tasks
they are asked to perform. Although many clients are accustomed
to assigning work to somewhat less-experienced staff, "contingent
workers" are oriented to filling the requested role. Because the
nature of the work tends to drive the rate for their services,
their "extra" experience can constitute a real efficiency bonus
verses other means of getting high quality work accomplished.
Interesting Assignments
Engagements may be as brief as an appearance, or be project or
time-based, and sometimes open-ended--even measured in years. It
is helpful to give some thought to likely duration, as many
candidates have a preference for well-defined engagements. That
preference can be reflected in a lower pay rate, if the candidate
has a good-faith expectation of relatively steady work over a
significant period of time.
A Responsive Search
When CBG receives an order, we first consult our proprietary
database, which is both coded and keyword-searchable. Having
narrowed the request to a reasonable number of qualified
candidates, we then review our interview and reference notes,
to give clients our best recommendations as to both capabilities
and "fit." Clients then typically choose to interview a small
group of pre-selected candidates, and make their final
determinations in further consultation with us. Sometimes
clients will pre-interview candidates in order to fill an
anticipated need quickly. In the rare event that the candidate
does not work out, the engagement may be terminated immediately,
by us.
A Convenient Process
Most temporary attorneys and all other legal professionals are placed by
CBG as its employees, thus ensuring against IRS exposure and benefits
issues. They are compensated weekly with time sheet hours approved by
the client employer in advance of payment. CBG bears all employer-side
taxes, and carries E&O and workers compensation insurance covering
the actions of our employees, to $1 million.
